Driftwood

In 'Driftwood,' I demonstrate a command of ceramic contrasts that captures the essence of natural processes. The work consists of a round base form whose dark surface - achieved through iron oxide and manganese oxide-containing clay powder - evokes the depth and richness of weathered earth. The texture speaks of time and erosion, of elements that have left their traces.

On top rests a flat lid that serves as a platform for a delicate construction of organic forms. Here I bring two material worlds together: the earthy, yellowish-white clay contrasts dramatically with the almost ethereal porcelain. This porcelain, which I worked to paper-thin transparency, catches light in a way that recalls sunlight shining on pale driftwood - bleached white, vulnerable, yet resilient.

My technical approach lies in the balance between these extremes. Where iron oxide, manganese oxide and clay powders give the base its robust, almost primitive character, the porcelain breathes refinement and fragility. Subtle accents of gold luster - a technique where I fire gold particles into the glaze at low temperature - add a dimension of preciousness that references the alchemical process of ceramics itself.

My use of wood ash in the glazing process connects the work directly to its title: ash from burned wood literally forms a bridge between the natural source of inspiration and the ceramic end result. These ashes create unpredictable color variations and textures that embrace chance, just as driftwood is shaped by the whims of wind and water.

'Driftwood' transcends the functional origins of pot and lid. It becomes my meditation on transience and permanence, on the power of natural processes to create beauty from what seemed lost. In a time when we are becoming increasingly aware of our relationship with nature, this work offers a tangible reminder of the poetry that emerges when time, elements and human creativity converge.
