My artistic approach

Hi, I'm Wouter. I create ceramics that embrace imperfection and the traces of time. I let my work arise spontaneously. I give a direction, but the textures themselves form in a natural, uncontrolled way. Every action of mine influences what happens, but the clay decides just as much which texture takes shape. Guidance and chance.

Transience is a common thread in my work. I am drawn to the effect of the passage of time on natural objects. Time softens, erodes, and leaves subtle marks in matter, layer after layer. The objects from my first series (2024–2025) look ancient, as if they had lain underground for centuries before being unearthed. Earthy browns, muted greens, and soft grays mingle with weathered textures, creating surfaces that invite close inspection and discovery. In 2026 I began experimenting with colour and contrast. Blue and red have already passed in review; other colours will follow.

My work is a hybrid of throwing and building techniques, creating a conversation between intention, chance, and the natural tendencies of the clay. Experimentation is central: I often use carriers that burn away during firing, leaving irregularities, cavities, and textures that could never be fully planned.

From the beginning I was inspired by Eastern ways of thinking. My 2025 study trip brought me into contact with the principles of Wu Xing, the five phases: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Every piece I make passes through all five: the clay is earth, water shapes it, fire fixes it, metal arrives in the oxides and the gold, and wood returns as ash in the glaze. The Dao, following the natural flow of the world, asks for attention to the direction in which a material already wants to move. In the studio that means following the clay for as long as I can, and trusting the fire with the rest.

My ceramic installations are accompanied by a carefully curated soundtrack that interacts with texture, shape, and space — a layered dialogue where intention meets chance.
